About
The Buxton Conference
A gathering of scholars, descendants, and community members dedicated to preserving and celebrating the extraordinary legacy of the North Buxton settlement.
What We Do
The Buxton Conference brings together genealogists, historians, educators, and community members for a full day of talks, discussions, and shared discovery. Each year the conference explores a theme that connects the history of the Elgin Settlement to the broader story of African-Canadian heritage.
This year’s theme — The Strength of Community — reflects the values at the heart of North Buxton: the belief that freedom is built together, not alone.

North Buxton & the Elgin Settlement
In 1849, the Reverend William King — alongside the families who would build it — established the Elgin Settlement on 9,000 acres of land in what is now Chatham-Kent, Ontario. It was one of the most intentional and successful freedom communities in North American history.
Settlers built homes, farms, schools, and churches. The Buxton Mission School became renowned for its academic excellence, drawing students from across the region. By the time of Confederation, the settlement stood as a powerful testament to what free Black communities could achieve when given land, autonomy, and mutual support.
The descendants of those original settlers still live in North Buxton today. The Buxton National Historic Site & Museum preserves their story — and the conference exists to extend that work into the present.
